Mapping Water, Grazing and Risk Together: Drone Surveys and Maps in Laikipia North

The Goal

Drone surveys, community mapping and a simple online dashboard to help communities in Mukogodo East and West plan for drought and floods.

Overview

Under the Women Empowerment and Environment & Health Support in Kenya initiative, Amilen Africa is helping communities in Laikipia North (Mukogodo East and West wards) prepare for climate and economic shocks. The work is for the Institute for Peace Development and Innovation (IPSIA).

We are mapping 13 community lands and 9 priority sand dams. Survey drones with high-precision GPS capture detailed images and 3D terrain, and communities add what they know about grazing areas, water, migration routes and flood-risk spots.

The results become 13 large, weather-resistant maps for use in the field, eight easy-to-read risk-reduction booklets and factsheets that include gender and pastoralist needs, and a light online dashboard that works on slow connections. All data is stored in an organised archive with standard descriptions and delivered in open formats.

What we did

  • 13 community lands and 9 sand dams mapped with drones and ground control points
  • 13 large, weather-resistant community resource and hazard maps
  • Eight disaster-risk booklets and factsheets with gender-responsive information
  • Light, low-bandwidth web dashboard with filters and data export
